Designer & Heritage

Born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1915, Sori Yanagi inherited a rich artistic legacy; his father, Soetsu Yanagi, spearheaded the Japanese Folk Art Movement and founded the Nihon Mingeikan, Japan's Folk Crafts Museum. Sori pursued studies in both art and architecture at the Tokyo Art School starting in 1934, drawing significant inspiration from figures like Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand. Post-WWII, Sori conceived numerous items, including furniture, a three-wheeled vehicle, an Olympic cauldron, and a pedestrian overpass. Among his celebrated creations are the Water Kettle, the iconic Butterfly Chair (1954), and various porcelain and silverware collections. Nihon Yoshokki Co Ltd, established in 1955 in Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan, is responsible for manufacturing the majority of Sori Yanagi's kitchenware and tableware designs.
